Stone CarbonNeutral®

What is CarbonNeutral®?

CarbonNeutral® demonstrates positive action to tackle climate change.

The CarbonNeutral® is a brand mark which is awarded when CO2 emissions have been measured and reduced to net zero in accordance with a standard called the CarbonNeutral protocol. Anything can be made CarbonNeutral® – events, activities, companies, products etc.

The scope of the carbon footprint is defined by the protocol and will change according to the brand mark awarded. The reductions are likely to be delivered through a mix of internal actions within a business itself, as well as through carbon offsetting.

What was the process for Stone to become CarbonNeutral®?

To achieve the CarbonNeutral brand mark, Stone went through a process which involved:

Measuring CO2 emissions from travel, waste and energy (the carbon footprint)
Setting a net zero CO2 target and planning for how and from where to make reductions
Executing a programme of external and internal CO2 reductions
Being awarded CarbonNeutral brand, and using it to inspire others to follow suit

How was the carbon footprint reduced to net zero?

Net zero CO2 is achieved though a mix of external and internal reductions.

External reductions are also known as ‘carbon offsets’. They enable a business to achieve deep net CO2 reductions in the short term. The way it works is that for every one tonne* of CO2 a business produces, they pay an equivalent amount of CO2 to be saved by an accredited project somewhere else in the world.

Internal reductions are CO2 savings from actions within an organization or operation – processes, systems and behaviour. The amount of that can be cut in this way will depending on the start point (how much has already been done) and projections for business growth. Single digit annual CO2 targets are common; larger reductions are more likely in the longer term because it is difficult to make internal changes overnight.

By complimenting external reductions with internal, businesses can reach net zero CO2 today, and to achieve a programme which helps them produce fewer emissions in the long term.

The carbon offsetting for Stone is organised by the leaders in the field, The CarbonNeutral Company.
